Nuuk

With more than 13,500 inhabitants, the capital of Nuuk is the largest town in Greenland, which you will notice straight away. Lively activity and perpetual change typify the town centre which is also the site of Greenland's Home Rule, large hotels and many of the town's shops. The town centre is also where you will find the Katuaq Cultural Centre, an internationally renowned architectural treasure. Katuaq is the setting of cultural events and conferences of both national and international character. You will also find many excellent restaurants in the heart of the town, which together with Hotel Hans Egede, Hotel Nuuk and Katuaq comprise ideal conference facilities.

In glaring contrast to modern urban life, the world's second largest fjord territory is right outside your door. Since the fjord at Nuuk does not freeze over in winter, boat trips are possible all year round, but fantastic experiences are particularly prevalent in summer. A favourite excursion spot is the fishing settlement of Kapisillit, situated in unusually scenic, tranquil surroundings at the head of the fjord.

Potential experiences abound near Nuuk. You can visit both Norse and Inuit ruins, fish for salmon and trout, go skiing or take almost any kind of hiking tour imaginable. You can also soar in a helicopter over the beautiful landscape all the way to the edge of the inland ice cap.

Nuuk was founded as Godthåb (Good Hope) by Hans Egede in 1728. The quarter around the old colony harbour is the oldest and most beautiful part of the town. It is also the location of the National Museum and Archives of Greenland, the home and statue of Hans Egede and the Church of Our Saviour from 1849. In Nuuk the entire history of Greenland passes before your very eyes, while the town simultaneously throbs with the hectic pulse of modern everyday life.
