Qasigiannguit - cradle of Greenlandic culture
Qasigiannguit, situated south of Ilulissat Isfjord (Ice Fjord), a completely unspoilt district in a striking natural area - is known as the green heart of Disko Bay. The area is characterised by warm summers with temperatures of up to 27 degrees Celsius. Qasigiannguit is steeped in history. The first inhabitants settled on Qeqertasussuk Island 4500 years ago. Excavations on the island revealed the presence of a Saqqaq settlement, and a new exhibition with impressive finds from the excavations opened at the town museum in summer 2002. Gentle hills, tundra plains, green passes, blue fjords, mountain tops with views over Isfjorden (Ice Fjord) and Disko Island all make the area ideal for hiking. The dog sled season starts early in Qasigiannguit - as early as December. From July to October you can enjoy whale spotting - even from the Hotel Disco Bay terrace. Welcome to Qasigiannguit |
