Summer programme

1. Atmospheric Qasigiannguit town
What goes on behind the doors of this idyllic Greenlandic town, where hunters live cheek by jowl with office managers, and sled dogs stand tethered next to snowmobiles and cars? Your guide will offer information about the town and its history, and we will visit the museum, housed in the old colonial buildings, where there are exhibits on the history of Qasigiannguit town, hunters' kayaks, hunting tools and clothing, plus unique and very exciting finds from the 4500-year-old Saqqaq culture. Due to the unique preservation conditions, it is possible to see flint knives with their handles still attached, wooden dishes, ladles and the oldest kamik, or Greenlandic boot, in the world. Greenland's oldest wooden house is also here, and just opposite stands the church, shaped like an iceberg. If you have any special requests for a visit to any particular institution, we will happily try to arrange it.

3. Midnight tour to Qaaqarssuaq /The Great Mountain
A tour to the town's landmark - the top of Qaaqarssuaq. The hike up the mountain is rather demanding, but definitely worth the effort. Along the way we visit old Christianshåb, where the foundations of the old buildings can still be seen. The tour continues over a tundra plain that makes even the largest among us feel small, before a green pass takes us to Præstens Hule (the Priest's Cave) and Paradise Bay, where the ascent begins. At the top of Qaaqarssuaq you can enjoy views of the town below, as well as Disko Bay with its ice fjord, towards the north.

Season: June-October

Price: EUR 60.- DKK 450.-. Packed lunch included. Min. 2 participants

4. Hike to Kangerluluk/Paradise Bay
Our first stop is old Christianshåb, where the foundations of the old buildings can still be seen. We continue over the tundra plain that lies at the foot of the Qaaqarssuaq mountain, and on through a green pass to Præstens Hule (the Priest's Cave). Præstens Hule was used by shamans for initiation rituals. Maybe the beautiful rose quartz and mica veins in the rock gave the old shamans a little extra power - who knows? The Cave offers an excellent view over Paradise Bay.

Price: EUR 50.- DKK 375.-. Packed lunch included. Minimum 2 participants

5. Boat trip to the whaling station
It is an overwhelming experience to stand beside the giant bones of a whale. These huge sea mammals have provided Greenlanders with nourishing meat for thousands of years, constituting an important source of vitamin C throughout the winter months. The guide will talk about whaling, and the tour will include the opportunity to taste a number of whale food products.

6. Boat trip to Grønne Ejland - in the hunters' footsteps
These fascinating islands have been a meeting place for the people of Disko Bay for hundreds of years. The many tent rings and ruins of the turf houses still remain as landmarks of a long-ago hunter culture that lasted many years. Disko Bay families still meet here throughout the summer, and it is a destination for many winter hunting trips. The islands have been the departure point for seal, whale and bird hunts, as well as egg collecting, and the numerous meat caches bear witness to excellent hunting. Grønne Ejland is home to one of the world's largest arctic tern colonies. The guide will talk about the prehistory of the islands, and there will be time to explore its history as well as look at the beautiful natural surroundings, and perhaps seek out a little of the spirit of the islands' prehistory.
